Nike built the ‘Mamba Eterno’ — ‘Eternal Mamba’ — as an act of remembrance for Día de Muertos (November 1–2), placing a marigold garden underneath the Kobe 3’s signature translucent cage, so the shoe changes as the light does. The Swooshes and ankle collars mismatch on purpose, the Kobe sheath logos sit in Picante Red on the tongues, and ‘Eterno’ is scripted inside the translucent outsole.
Underneath the tribute it is still a Protro — Nike’s performance rebuild of the 2008 original, with a full-length Air Zoom strobel over Cushlon 3.0 foam, more breathable materials and retooled traction. Kobe retros have been the hottest line in the calendar all year, which makes a full size run sitting at retail the morning after genuinely unusual. If you slept on release day, this is the rare Kobe that lets you wake up.
