Sir Patrick Stewart has died at 86. His family announced his death on October 29, saying he died at home in Los Angeles on Wednesday, October 28, after a brief journey with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia, and that he was in the loving care of his wife, Sunny Ozell.

Born on July 13, 1940, in Mirfield, Yorkshire, Stewart built a career of nearly six decades that moved between the Royal Shakespeare Company and some of the most widely watched screen franchises of the past 40 years.

He played Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation for seven seasons, from 1987 to 1994, and in four films, later returning to the role in Star Trek: Picard from 2020 to 2023. From 2000, he played Professor Charles Xavier in Fox’s X-Men films, opposite Ian McKellen’s Magneto, and he is set to appear posthumously as Xavier in Avengers: Doomsday, scheduled for release on December 18, 2026.

Stewart published his memoir, Making It So, in 2023. He is survived by his wife, Sunny Ozell, and his children, Daniel and Sophia.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked for memorial contributions to be made to the Johns Hopkins Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center Fund and the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America Caregiver Resources.

Sir Ian McKellen was among those paying tribute to his longtime friend and co-star.
